This article is about Types of Internet Connections – The Internet stands for International Network, it is a worldwide network of computers that allows millions of people to share information and their ideas through text, video clips, audio, images, etc. using their computers across the world. Internet Networks are a ‘Network of Networks’ that consists of millions of public networks across the global and global scope of local. Basically, a network is a group connected by two or more computer systems.
Types of Internet Connections
There are many ways to connect to the internet, we are only using 3 types of internet connection which are dial-up connection, broadband connection, and wireless connection. Let’s discuss the 3 types of internet connection.
Dial-up connection
The dial-up connection uses the telephone line to connect to the Internet. Connecting a PC to the internet requires a modem to set up a dial-up connection. This modem works as an interface between the PC and the telephone line. There is also a communication program that modifies the phone number of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that is designated to receive dial-up calls.
Broadband Connection
Broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access, it allows for the transmission of large amounts of data at faster speeds and is always on and faster than Dial-up access. Broadband uses a variety of technologies to deliver high-speed internet such as telephone lines, cable modems, fiber optic cables, DSL, wireless networks, and so on.
Broadband access allows users to connect to the Internet at a greater speed of at least 25 Mbps (megabits per second) which is several times faster than a standard 256 KB modem or dial-up access. Let’s discuss some transmission technologies that are used by Broadband to provide high-speed internet.
1. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
DSL is an acronym for Digital Subscriber Line, it is a popular broadband connection. It is a form of Broadband connection as it provides a connection over an ordinary telephone line. DSL provides the Internet to the user by transmitting digital data over the wires of a local telephone network. DSL technology comes in different variations, there are:
- Asymmetric DSL ( ADSL)
- Symmetric DSL (SDSL)
- High bit-rate DSL (HDSL)
- Rate adaptive DSL (RDSL)
- Very High bit-rate DSL (VDSL)
- ISDN DSL (IDSL)
All of the above-mentioned technologies differ in their upload and download speed, bit transfer rate, and level of service.
2. Cable Modem
Cable Modem is a type of service that provides transmission of high-speed Internet access of 1.5 Mbps or more through the CATV network. It is using the same coaxial cables that deliver pictures and sound to your TV set. This type of cable network can transmit a very large amount, which is several times faster than a traditional dial-up connection.
- A cable modem is used to access this service, provided by the cable operator.
- The Cable modem comprises two connections: one for internet service and the other for Cable TV signals.
- Since Cable TV internet connections share a set amount of bandwidth with a group of customers, therefore, data transfer rate also depends on the number of customers using the internet at the same time.
Satellite Internet Connection
A satellite internet connection offers a high-speed connection to the internet. There are two types of satellite internet connection that are “one-way connection or two-way connection. In the one-way connection, we can only download data but if we want to upload, we need dialup access through ISP over a telephone line. In two two-way connections, we can download and upload the data by satellite. It does not require any dial-up connection.
Wireless Connection
Wireless Internet Connection is one of the most popular internet connections that allows devices to connect to the Internet without the need for physical wires or cables. Wireless Internet connection uses radio frequency bands to the internet and offers a very high speed, in simple words, it uses radio waves to transmit data between devices internet.
A wireless internet connection can be obtained by either Wireless Fidelity (WiFI), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), or Mobile Wireless Broadband Services.
